Whale-watching excursions leave from Depoe Bay every day when weather permits for roughly 10 months out of the year, and spring brings clearer and calmer days to see more whales. Spring Brings Whales in Mid-Migration

The beautiful Pacific Gray Whale is the most commonly spotted on the Central Oregon Coast. The whale-watching season typically runs from December to October, but there are two parts of the season. From December to May, Pacific Gray Wales in the midst of their migration are constantly passing through the Oregon Coast. Most whales spotted in the spring are on the northern end of their migration path, but there are also some heading south. By mid to late May, however, you can also catch the approximately 20 “resident whales” that return every year to Depoe Bay.

Pacific Gray Whales tend to stay around Depoe Bay for extended periods when they are in the midst of their northern migration. This is because their migration is so long – all the way from the Bering Sea between Asia and North America down to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez before heading north again. As they head down, many of the cows (female whales) are pregnant. The cows eat very little in order to reach their destination in the warm lagoons of Baja to give birth, as their calves are not born with enough blubber to survive in cold waters. On the way back up north for summer, though, the emaciated female cows will stop and stay for a while to fill up their bellies and regain their blubber in Depoe Bay.

Details of the Half Marathon & 10K

Every year around the start of March, the Lincoln City Half Marathon & 10K returns to this beautiful stretch of Oregon coastline to kickstart spring, get people moving and raise some money for great causes. This year’s course starts at Taft High School at 9 am on Sunday, March 4^th. The out-and-back course takes runners, joggers, and walkers through 13.1 or 6.2 miles of rural, scenic, two-lane roads peppered with rolling hills.

Registered runners and walkers can pick up their race packets with technical t-shirts on Saturday, March 3^rd from noon to 3:00 pm at the Lincoln City Community Center, or from 7:00-8: 30 am on race day at Taft High School. All those who complete the race will receive a finisher medal, and additional prizes will be given to the top male and female finishers in five age groups for each of the two races. A Whale of a Christmas in Depoe Bay

While the main Christmas tree in downtown Lincoln City is lit the weekend following Thanksgiving, the Depoe Bay Christmas tree is lit on December 7^th during its own special ceremony. Enjoy music from carolers and take in all the festive decorations, then enjoy a Christmas Holiday Dinner in the Community Hall.

Jingle Bell 5K Jog & Walk

The 5th Annual Jingle Bell 5K Jog/Walk returns to the Lincoln City Community Center this December 16^th at 9:30am. Whether you walk, jog or run, you are welcome to participate in this exciting event! Christmas Eve Concert with Kids Sing Out

Storm Chasing on the Oregon Coast

The early winter months are a perfect time to book one of our Oregon beach house rentals and experience Mother Nature in all her glory. The central Oregon coast comes alive during this time of year when storm-chasing is a favorite pastime of locals and visitors alike. Lincoln City will be your central hub for an adventure like no other as you watch the storms surge, the waves crash against the rocks, the rains pound the ground and the winds carry you away. There is also plenty to keep you occupied if the weather is calm, from food and drink to art and music. This is one sort of vacation where you won’t be wishing for calm weather, though.
