If you’re not lucky enough to find your own float on the beach, though, you can pick up an exclusive float by artist Ro Purser at the opening of the ‘American Made Glass Fishing Float Exhibit’ at North Lincoln County Historical Museum from 11am-3pm on the 20^th.

When to Visit and What to Expect

This year’s season of weekly beachcombing clinics started on New Year’s Day, and there are only four sessions left in 2019. Weather permitting, these clinics will take place at the SW 33rd Street beach access point on the following dates and times:

Wednesday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 27 at 11:00 a.m.

The clinics each begin with a short orientation followed by a walk along the beach with stops to guide you through the process of hunting for seaside treasures such as gemstones, fossils, agates, shells, rocks, minerals, jasper, and petrified wood. Beachcombers are advised to follow strict beach safety precautions, wear good outdoors shoes, and to bring a raincoat, a pair of gloves, and a sturdy container or bag for collecting all your treasures. Over the course of the two-hour clinic you are also encouraged to ask lots of questions, so that next time you go to the beach, you’ll know exactly what you’re looking for.

Gem & Jewelry Lovers Are Always Welcome

Even when the beachcombing clinic season is over, visitors can always find Laura Joki at Rock Your World, a shop in Lincoln City’s Nelscott District run by her and husband Mike Joki. They sell all sorts of rocks, gems, fossils, and handcrafted jewelry made from these and other treasures from the seaside. It’s always worth a visit even if you just want to have a chat and see what they have in their collection. If you love shopping for unique and handmade items, there are also several other jewelry shops in Lincoln City as well as art galleries, glass and pottery studios, gift shops, and other unique stores where local artisans and antique dealers sell their wares.

The Bijou Theatre continues its Saturday Morning Cinema series on May 26^th with the 1939 film “They Made Me A Criminal” at 11 AM for only $2. The classic movie stars John Garfield as a boxer on the run after being accused of murder, who finds himself at a working farm where he meets The Dead End Kids. The theatre will also host a special Memorial Day Summer Morning Matinee with the beloved 1991 animated film “An American Tail 2” at 11 AM for $2.

Summer Sundays in Lincoln City are made for the farmer’s and crafters market, where everything is either home-grown or hand-made by the people selling it. On May 27^th, June 3^rd and other upcoming Sundays, you will find the market at the Lincoln City Cultural Center from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Local Players Perform at Theatre West

Borderline Crazies is playing at Theatre West from May 31^st to June 2^nd with doors at 7 PM and curtains at 7:30 PM. The play takes place in and around a rustic Lake Tahoe cabin, which has been double-booked for a snowy weekend. Just as everyone is fighting over who gets to stay, a snowstorm seals everyone inside – and to make matters worse, an ax murderer is on the loose!

Spring Brings Whales in Mid-Migration

The beautiful Pacific Gray Whale is the most commonly spotted on the Central Oregon Coast. The whale-watching season typically runs from December to October, but there are two parts of the season. From December to May, Pacific Gray Wales in the midst of their migration are constantly passing through the Oregon Coast. Most whales spotted in the spring are on the northern end of their migration path, but there are also some heading south. By mid to late May, however, you can also catch the approximately 20 “resident whales” that return every year to Depoe Bay.

Pacific Gray Whales tend to stay around Depoe Bay for extended periods when they are in the midst of their northern migration. This is because their migration is so long – all the way from the Bering Sea between Asia and North America down to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez before heading north again. As they head down, many of the cows (female whales) are pregnant. The cows eat very little in order to reach their destination in the warm lagoons of Baja to give birth, as their calves are not born with enough blubber to survive in cold waters. On the way back up north for summer, though, the emaciated female cows will stop and stay for a while to fill up their bellies and regain their blubber in Depoe Bay.
